The idea of making our mark on this world took us back home onto a beautiful piece of family owned land. Of course the land has been empty for 30 years and it needed quite a bit of TLC but we couldn’t jump in fast enough. From the first shovel in the dirt to the last decoration in our house, we decided to be very hands on with this adventure.
There were definitely times when we thought hiring the duties out would be easier but in the end we knew that doing it ourselves was well worth the headache. In the span of 3 months we ordered the house, excavated the land, and placed the house on the foundation; all with living 400 miles away from our new little slice of paradise. Exhausting, daunting, overwhelming….hell yes!!!! But never one single regret!!!!!
If I was however to pass on any advice, it would be to take more time. That may sound weird, but it would have been nice to have some more time to get all of the steps accomplished. Clearing land, digging in water and power lines, pouring a foundation, taking care of land deeds and surveys: its a lot to handle. We created the time crunch for ourselves because the house had to go in before the ground thawed but if I could do it over, I would definitely give myself some more time. DON’T RUSH!!! Well maybe not lol….. I love being able to get into my house and play, waiting just isn’t in my repertoire.
